North East Rehabilitation Officers

Working Together With People Who Are Visually Impaired

NERO was set up to provide support, encouragement, networking opportunities and to enable rehabilitation officers to work together across the North Eastern region. A rehabilitation officer/worker is observing someone crossing a road using a long cane. We are still in the early stages of our formation but already our members are feeling the benefits of belonging to a specialist group and have found meeting together most helpful in building good working relationships. We have had many lively, stimulating and challenging discussions about our rehab practice. It is interesting for local authority workers and voluntary sector workers to learn of our contrasting practices and in some cases to support each other when there is a joint service user involved.

We feel that the NERO website is adding another dimension to our group and will further enhance the effectiveness of our work. We are keen to receive contributions both locally and nationally from fellow rehab officers, other related professionals, and from service users.

The overall aim of NERO is to work together to enhance services for visually impaired people across our region.

Welcome

We hope you will enjoy the content of the NERO website and welcome any comments or suggestions to assist further development.

I hope that in the future the website will include:

  • Message Board - a place where you can raise or respond to queries. An opportunity to learn from each other and share expertise
  • Rehab Jobs - A free space for potential employers to advertise Rehabilitation Vacancies
  • Booklist - a place where rehab and related books are briefly described with space for a personal rating
  • Articles - documents covering all rehabilitation issues
  • World Focus - discover what work is being done in other countries
  • History - a trip into the past to find out how it all started
  • Visual Impairment Awareness - What this means

Our vision is for the website to be interactive. Your input will therefore be needed in order to achieve this outcome. Bookmark our website as one of your "favourites" and watch this space for future developments.

The NERO logo consists of an eye placed in the middle of a photo of the Newcastle/Gateshead Millennium 'Blinking Eye' Bridge and the Tyne Bridge. Both bridges are reflected in the water creating the rounded shape of an eye. The letters NERO are positioned in the gap between the two bridges..
